Some aspects of thermal inflation: The finite temperature potential and topological defects.
Currently favoured extensions of the Standard Model typically contain ‘flaton fields’ defined as fields with large vacuum expectation values (vevs) and almost flat potentials. If a flaton field is trapped at the origin in the early universe, one expects ‘thermal inflation’ to take place before it rolls away to the true vacuum, because the finite-temperature correction to the potential will hold...
متن کاملStandard Model Criticality Prediction : Top mass 173 ± 5 GeV and Higgs mass 135 ± 9 GeV
Imposing the constraint that the Standard Model effective Higgs potential should have two degenerate minima (vacua), one of which should be-order of magnitudewise-at the Planck scale, leads to the top mass being 173 ± 5 GeV and the Higgs mass 135 ± 9 GeV. This requirement of the degeneracy of different phases is a special case of what we call the multiple point criticality principle. In the pre...
متن کاملPhase transitions from preheating in gauge theories
We show by studying the Abelian Higgs model with numerical lattice simulations that nonthermal phase transitions arising out of preheating after inflation are possible in gauge-Higgs models under rather general circumstances. This may lead to the formation of gauged topological defects and, if the scale at which inflation ends is low enough, to electroweak baryogenesis after preheating.
متن کاملPostinflationary Higgs relaxation and the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry.
The recent measurement of the Higgs boson mass implies a relatively slow rise of the standard model Higgs potential at large scales, and a possible second minimum at even larger scales. Consequently, the Higgs field may develop a large vacuum expectation value during inflation. The relaxation of the Higgs field from its large postinflationary value to the minimum of the effective potential repr...
متن کاملSpacetime Curvature and Higgs Stability after Inflation.
We investigate the dynamics of the Higgs field at the end of inflation in the minimal scenario consisting of an inflaton field coupled to the standard model only through the nonminimal gravitational coupling ξ of the Higgs field. Such a coupling is required by renormalization of the standard model in curved space, and in the current scenario also by vacuum stability during high-scale inflation....
